December Garden

Can’t believe it, but I’m still getting produce from my “summer” garden!
I few of this produce came from fall plantings, but many of my summer plants are still producing, though they have slowed way down.

Spinach and kale are from my fall garden. The peppers are from 3 plants I put in last spring. I’ve been getting peppers for 3 months or so, more than our family can eat.

Carrots are over planted and thinned throughout the summer and fall. I pick the largest and let the rest keep growing. I get enough carrots to feed our family from one small 2 ft square patch that was planted last may from seed.

There are still more carrots in the ground!

Leeks have been growing since last spring, I pull them as needed.
This is the last ones, I used some tonight in my french lentil stew.

Ojo de cabra beans, the small, round white ones come out of the pods once they dry. This is the second round of beans off the 6 plants I planted last spring.

Parsley is from one plant that has been growing since May. I cut sprigs all summer and fall as needed. Rich in vitamin C and adds a fresh taste to recipes. It is growing well!

The lettuce is a new batch. I replant lettuce from seed or 6 packs I buy at the nursery every few months. I cut leaves as I need lettuce.

What’s under those leaves?

trombetta leaves

Trombetta!

It’s an Italian squash, similar to zucchini but grows on a climbing vine. It has been growing since May, and producing lists of squash. The squash is hearty, flavorful and firm. It takes a little longer to cook than zucchini, but doesn’t tend to get mushy like zucchini.

The whole family is happy when I harvest from the garden.
